# LinkedIn Requires a Password During Linking

> Connect LinkedIn when your account normally signs in through Google or Microsoft and does not yet have a LinkedIn password.

> LinkedIn may ask for an email address and password during account authorization, even if you normally use Google or Microsoft to sign in.

## Why this happens

Signing in to LinkedIn with Google or Microsoft can let you access LinkedIn without regularly entering a separate LinkedIn password. The authorization screen used to connect an account may still require LinkedIn's own email-and-password sign-in.

Do not enter your Google or Microsoft password. Create or reset the password for the LinkedIn account itself.

## Create a LinkedIn password

1. On LinkedIn's sign-in screen, choose **Forgot password?**
2. Enter the email address or phone number associated with the LinkedIn account.
3. Choose how to receive the verification code.
4. Enter the code LinkedIn sends you.
5. Create and confirm a new LinkedIn password.
6. Return to **Accounts** in Overlap and restart the LinkedIn connection.
7. On LinkedIn's authorization screen, enter the LinkedIn email address and the new password.

You can also begin from LinkedIn's [password reset page](https://www.linkedin.com/uas/request-password-reset). LinkedIn may ask for an additional identity or security check before accepting the reset.

<Warning>
  Enter credentials only on a LinkedIn-owned sign-in page. Overlap does not ask you to send us your LinkedIn password, verification code, or two-factor authentication code.
</Warning>

## If the connection still fails

* Sign in to LinkedIn directly with the new password to confirm it works.
* Complete any security prompt, CAPTCHA, or identity check LinkedIn displays.
* Make sure the browser is signed in to the LinkedIn account you intend to connect.
* Sign out of other LinkedIn accounts or retry in a private browser window.
* Return to **Accounts** and start a new connection instead of reusing an expired authorization window.

If LinkedIn reports that the account is restricted, resolve the restriction in LinkedIn before reconnecting.
