Use this guide when any social account shows Needs Relink, Disconnected, an expired authorization, or permission errors after previously working.
Social networks control the authorization that lets Overlap publish. They can expire or revoke that authorization at any time, including when nothing has changed in Overlap.
Why an account becomes unlinked
Common causes include:
- the account password, username, or sign-in method changed
- the social network detected a new device, browser, location, or other security event
- a security check, CAPTCHA, identity confirmation, or updated terms require attention
- the account owner removed the connection in the social network’s app settings
- requested publishing permissions were removed or changed
- the person who originally connected the account lost the required role or access
- a Page, company, channel, or professional profile changed owners, roles, or account type
- the social network periodically expired the authorization
- the account was restricted, suspended, made private, or otherwise became ineligible for publishing
An unlink does not delete content already published on the social network. Posts that are still scheduled cannot publish successfully until the account is connected again.
Relink the account
- Sign in to the social network directly with the account that owns or manages the destination.
- Complete every security alert, verification request, CAPTCHA, updated-terms prompt, or account-status action.
- Confirm you can still access and publish to the intended profile, Page, company, or channel.
- In Overlap, open Accounts from the left sidebar and select the platform.
- Find the affected account and choose Relink. If it is no longer listed, choose Connect instead.
- Approve every requested permission. Removing an individual permission can allow the connection to finish while preventing publishing or analytics from working.
- Return to Accounts and confirm that the account shows Connected.
- Review
Social Calendar for posts that failed or were scheduled while the account was disconnected. Reschedule failed posts only after confirming the connection works.
Check the destination account before retrying a failed post. A social network can occasionally accept a post and still return an error. Retrying without checking can create a duplicate.
The wrong account opens during relinking
Authorization may reuse the social account already signed in to your browser.
- Open the social network in another browser tab and sign out.
- Sign in only to the account you intend to reconnect.
- Start Relink again from Overlap.
If the wrong account is still selected, use a private or incognito window. For an account owned by someone else, use Invite platform owner from the relevant platform tab instead of asking for their password.
Relinking still fails
- Try a current desktop browser and allow pop-ups for Overlap.
- Temporarily pause a VPN, ad blocker, or strict tracking protection during authorization.
- Confirm the account is not restricted and can publish a simple original post directly in the social app.
- Confirm the connecting person still has the required Page, company, or channel permissions.
- If the social network imposes a waiting period after a security event, wait for it to clear instead of repeatedly reconnecting.
- Use the platform-specific troubleshooting guide in
FAQ when the error mentions an account type, missing Page or channel, password requirement, or restriction.
If the account still will not reconnect, contact Overlap support with:
- the workspace and affected account name
- the social platform
- a screenshot of the complete error
- the approximate time and time zone of the relink attempt
- whether you can publish directly in the social network
- any affected Social Calendar post link
Never send your social account password, recovery code, app password, or two-factor authentication code.
